News Media Framing of Suicide Circumstances and Gender: Mixed Methods Analysis

The SOSS furthers research in this area by measuring specific words and how they may stigmatize or glorify perspectives. The scale reports a list of words that can be used to further understand, identify, and explore such framings. For example, “shallow,” “pathetic,” and “immoral” are associated with stigmatizing perspectives (ie, those perspectives that ascribe a negative attitude or perception toward those who die by suicide).
