Consequently, we propose the following hypothesis:
Hopelessness negatively moderates the effects of the usefulness of IGC and the positivity of UGC on the attitudes of patients with depression toward medication adherence such that the effects are stronger when a patient has a low level of hopelessness but weaker or even negated when a patient has a high level of hopelessness (hypothesis 8).

One such measure of poor adolescent mental health that has received growing attention in recent studies and media reports is a single-item measure of experiences of sadness or hopelessness [6,7]. Since 1999, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) YRBSS has included this single-item measure [8].

We did not identify a reduction of hopelessness in i CBT compared with control conditions (b=−0.24; 95% CI −0.48 to 0.00; P=.11; n=1785; k=5). Similarly, there was no significant effect on treatment response (ie, 50% reduction in hopelessness) in i CBT compared with controls (b=0.56; 95% CI −0.12 to 1.25; P=.21; n=1785; k=5). In hopelessness models, treatment effects were modeled as random effects (ie, heterogeneous treatment effects) based on model comparisons.

Participants in the self-applied multicomponent web-based psychological intervention would report better indicators related to grief and show a reduction in symptoms of anxiety, depression, PTSD, and hopelessness and the risk of suicide compared with the waitlist group. These changes would be maintained for 3 months after treatment completion.

MSM tend to have high levels of loneliness and hopelessness [12,13]. The positive associations between loneliness/hopelessness and IGD have been well established, both theoretically and empirically in general and student populations [8,14,15]. Understanding such associations among MSM is highly warranted.

Engaging with news that decreases optimism about COVID-19 may contribute to broader psychiatric symptoms, including worry and hopelessness. International research has found that hopelessness, which is associated with lower optimism about the future [41,42], has increased among adult samples during the pandemic [43]. News outlets and mental health experts have speculated that consumption of media related to COVID-19 may increase hopelessness [44-46].
