Probing Public Perceptions of Antidepressants on Social Media: Mixed Methods Study
Research consistently highlights significant variability in antidepressant adherence across different populations. A review of studies over the past decade reveals that approximately 50% of patients discontinue antidepressant therapy prematurely, which underscore the pervasive nature of nonadherence [3].

This study tested the acceptability, feasibility, and preliminary effectiveness of an intervention designed to improve adherence and depression outcomes among veterans initiating antidepressant medication. In the intervention, veterans used Annie, the Department of VA mobile app SMS, to support self-management of antidepressant medication use. Implementation and adoption of Annie have been explored in self-support for the hepatitis C virus.

How patients handle the first weeks related to a newly prescribed antidepressant is a key factor, which is affected by guidance, information, and shared decision-making with the treating physician [8]. However, on-time high availability and high continuity between appointments to support, guide, and inform a patient are difficult factors to offer in a nonautomated manner.

In a survey study of college students, An et al [26] found that among participants who had no experience of depression, high exposure to antidepressant videos on television improved respondents’ ability to recognize depression cases, increased their awareness of treatment with antidepressants, and augmented their evaluation of this type of drug.

In another study, Clelland et al [30] showed a significant protective association between antidepressant use and COVID-19. Hoertel et al [31] showed a protective effect of fluoxetine or fluvoxamine on COVID-19 mortality. In a separate study, Hoertel et al [29] used a Cox regression model to investigate the association between antidepressant intake and the risk of intubation and COVID-19 mortality.

Additionally, research has shown that aside from its antidepressant properties, IV ketamine can rapidly reduce suicidal ideation in patients with depression [7,17-20], but IN esketamine has not [21,22]. However, it is important to note that IN esketamine has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of TRD and has clinical trials supporting its use with more long-term data and larger sample sizes than IV ketamine [8].

As in the word cloud, the most popular words are “withdrawal,” “stop,” and “antidepressant.” These words reflect major concerns expressed in the forum. Betweenness centrality relates to words with a mediator role, serving as paths linking to other words in the network. It quantifies the control of a word on the communication between other words.
