Visualizing Patient Pathways and Identifying Data Repositories in a UK Neurosciences Center: Exploratory Study

Visualizing Patient Pathways and Identifying Data Repositories in a UK Neurosciences Center: Exploratory Study

In the United Kingdom, the National Health Service (NHS) is the largest health care provider, and as such, it holds a large amount of complex and sensitive data. A recent study mapped NHS data flows at a national level, highlighting its scale and complexity, with a lack of transparency, duplication of datasets, and failure to follow best practices for data safety, as well as the need to ensure the capability for electronic health record (EHR) data extraction [1].

Factors Affecting Specialty Training Preference Among UK Medical Students (FAST): Protocol for a National Cross-Sectional Survey

Factors Affecting Specialty Training Preference Among UK Medical Students (FAST): Protocol for a National Cross-Sectional Survey

Following medical school, graduates enter the National Health Service’s (NHS) 2-year foundation program, exposing them to a variety of medical specialties. As specialty training commences immediately after the completion of the foundation program, those not intending to take a career break must apply to specialty training (also known as residency training) in the United Kingdom at the beginning of their second year of their career (Foundation Year 2).

Landscape of Digital Technologies Used in the National Health Service in England: Content Analysis

Landscape of Digital Technologies Used in the National Health Service in England: Content Analysis

We use these constructs as the theoretical lens to categorize the digital tools used in various CCGs in NHS England. This paper aims to identify the set of digital technologies that have been deployed by the NHS CCGs in England. This study has several contributions. First, it contributes to the health care literature by providing insights into how regional differences in technology, under an NHS system in England, can vary in their capabilities and efforts in implementing digital technologies.

Using Conversational AI to Facilitate Mental Health Assessments and Improve Clinical Efficiency Within Psychotherapy Services: Real-World Observational Study

Using Conversational AI to Facilitate Mental Health Assessments and Improve Clinical Efficiency Within Psychotherapy Services: Real-World Observational Study

For instance, in the English National Health Service (NHS), between 2021 and 2022, 31% of referrals to Talking Therapy services dropped off the wait list before starting treatment, and 9% of patients waited for >6 weeks for their clinical assessment [11].

Ascertaining the Career Intentions of Medical Students (AIMS) in the United Kingdom Post Graduation: Protocol for a Mixed Methods Study

Ascertaining the Career Intentions of Medical Students (AIMS) in the United Kingdom Post Graduation: Protocol for a Mixed Methods Study

A British Medical Association survey of 8000 senior doctors determined that 44% of National Health Service (NHS) consultants in England plan to leave or take a break from working in the NHS over the next year [6]. Similarly, a recent survey of 4553 junior doctors in the NHS reported that 4 in 10 plan to leave the NHS, with 33% of these wanting to immigrate to another country to work [7].

Estimating the Economic Value of Automated Virtual Reality Cognitive Therapy for Treating Agoraphobic Avoidance in Patients With Psychosis: Findings From the gameChange Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial

Estimating the Economic Value of Automated Virtual Reality Cognitive Therapy for Treating Agoraphobic Avoidance in Patients With Psychosis: Findings From the gameChange Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial

Our study examined the potential economic value of providing game Change to patients with psychosis in the UK NHS. We used randomized controlled trial data to estimate the difference in health-related quality of life and use of NHS and wider societal resources for patients who received game Change in addition to TAU compared with TAU alone.

Health Care Workers’ Need for Headspace: Findings From a Multisite Definitive Randomized Controlled Trial of an Unguided Digital Mindfulness-Based Self-help App to Reduce Healthcare Worker Stress

Health Care Workers’ Need for Headspace: Findings From a Multisite Definitive Randomized Controlled Trial of an Unguided Digital Mindfulness-Based Self-help App to Reduce Healthcare Worker Stress

In the National Health Service (NHS) in England, which employs >1.3 million health care staff [12], 46.8% of staff reported feeling unwell because of work-related stress [12], a figure that has steadily risen since 2016. Almost one-quarter of the days lost to staff sickness in the NHS are because of stress, anxiety, depression, or other mental health problems [13], and similar concerns have been noted in health care systems worldwide [14].

Brief Digital Interventions to Support the Psychological Well-being of NHS Staff During the COVID-19 Pandemic: 3-Arm Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial

Brief Digital Interventions to Support the Psychological Well-being of NHS Staff During the COVID-19 Pandemic: 3-Arm Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial

The RCT was approved by the NHS Health Research Authority (20/SW/0098) and registered at the ISRCTN Registry (ISRCTN18107122). The intervention phase ran from September 7 to October 5, 2020, during the start of the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in Scotland. A mixed factorial repeated measures design was used, with full randomization to 3 parallel groups. A research assistant not involved in the RCT randomized participants after baseline using computerized simple randomization.

Evaluation of Treatment Descriptions and Alignment With Clinical Guidance of Apps for Depression on App Stores: Systematic Search and Content Analysis

Within the United Kingdom, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) seeks to improve outcomes for people using the National Health Service (NHS) and other public health services through the provision of evidence-based guidance, quality standards, and performance metrics. NICE guidelines for the treatment and management of depression in adults [4,5] recommend a stepped care approach of clinical and cost-effective interventions.

Timely Digital Patient-Clinician Communication in Specialist Clinical Services for Young People: A Mixed-Methods Study (The LYNC Study)

Timely Digital Patient-Clinician Communication in Specialist Clinical Services for Young People: A Mixed-Methods Study (The LYNC Study)

In the United Kingdom, government policy and investment is driving the digitization of the National Health Service (NHS) [14,15]. With the rollout of NHSmail 2 [16], NHS clinicians now have access to secure email and other digital channels for communicating with patients on clinical matters. Evidence for effectiveness on health outcome of the use of digital channels with patients on clinical matters is not strong.
