Join Dr. Eric Achtyes and Dr. John Torous for a timely and thought-provoking discussion on the evolving role of technology in clinical care. Drawing on real-world experience with mental health apps, the panel will examine how digital tools are being integrated into psychiatric practice. The conversation will also address the critical responsibility of physicians to advocate for rigorous evaluation, testing, and safeguards as technology—including rapidly advancing AI tools—is introduced into patient care settings. The session will conclude with an invitation to participate in a survey assessing physicians' expectations and perspectives on AI in clinical care.

Dr. Eric Achtyesus

Eric D. Achtyes, MD, MS is Professor and Chair of Psychiatry at the Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine (WMed). Dr. Achtyes has served as an investigator on more than sixty clinical trials in schizophrenia and depression, including several studies involving mental health apps and digital interventions. He has authored over 100 publications in peer-reviewed journals, including JMIR Mental Health, BMJ, JAMA, JAMA Psychiatry, The Lancet Psychiatry, Molecular Psychiatry, and Nature Medicine. He currently serves as Associate Editor for the Schizophrenia section of Frontiers in Psychiatry. 

Dr. Achtyes is a past President of the Michigan Psychiatric Society and a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. He has been elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) and Sigma Xi honor societies. In 2022, he was named "Physician/Psychiatrist of the Year" by NAMI Michigan. His current work at the intersection of psychiatry and technology involves an international collaboration focused on ensuring the safety and efficacy of AI tools in clinical care.

John Torous, MD, MBI; Cofounder, Society of Digital Psychiatry

Dr Torous is the director of the Digital Psychiatry division in the Department of Psychiatry at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, an affiliated teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School, where he also serves as a staff psychiatrist and member of the academic faculty. He has a background in electrical engineering and computer sciences; he earned his undergraduate degree from the University of California, Berkeley, before pursuing medical school at the University of California, San Diego. Dr Torous completed his psychiatry residency, fellowship in clinical informatics, and master’s degree in biomedical informatics at Harvard. He actively investigates the potential of mobile mental health technologies for psychiatry and has published over 200 peer-reviewed articles and 5 book chapters on the subject. Dr Torous serves as the editor-in-chief of JMIR Mental Health.
