Panelists: 

John Torous, MD, MBI, Co-founder, Society of Digital Psychiatry

Dr Torous is the director of the Digital Psychiatry division in the Department of Psychiatry at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, an affiliated teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School, where he also serves as a staff psychiatrist and member of the academic faculty. He has a background in electrical engineering and computer sciences, and he earned his undergraduate degree from UC Berkeley before pursuing medical school at UC San Diego. 

Dr Torous completed his psychiatry residency, fellowship in clinical informatics, and master’s degree in biomedical informatics at Harvard University. He actively investigates the potential of mobile mental health technologies for psychiatry and has published over 75 peer-reviewed articles and 5 book chapters on the subject. Dr Torous serves as the editor-in-chief of JMIR Mental Health, leads the American Psychiatric Association’s work group on the evaluation of smartphone apps, and is an advisor to the smartphone mood study within the National Institutes of Health’s 1-million-person All of Us research program.


Anil Thapliyal, Executive Director, eMental Health International Collaborative

Anil Thapliyal is known for his decisive, personable, and internationally recognized leadership in mental health care transformation. He is committed to creating mental health systems that improve outcomes for all by responding rapidly to each individual’s needs, eliminating inequalities, and ensuring every member of our global population has access to care at the time and place of their choosing. In recognition of his expertise in the eMental Health domain, he was appointed as adjunct professor at the Faculty of Health and Environmental Sciences, Auckland University of Technology, New Zealand, in 2014. His work has received several awards in areas as diverse as innovation, social responsibility and ethics and compliance for his services in the digital mental health domain development.

He is the executive director of the eMental Health International Collaborative (eMHIC), which is supported by the governments of the United States, Sweden, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, Singapore, the Philippines, and New Zealand. He served as an advisor to the special committees within the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet in New Zealand in the areas of mental health and data and digital health, and he has also been a key advisor to the eMental Health Section at the World Psychiatric Association and UNICEF. In 2020, he was appointed as a leadership fellow at St George’s House, Windsor Castle, Berkshire, United Kingdom.
